Vietnamese golfers Nguyen Hong Ngan (L) and Nguyen Nhu Nguyen (R)
Competing against golfers from almost 40 countries, the Vietnamese delegation – with Do Viet Hung, Luu Xuan Loc, Phan Thanh Hai, Nguyen Hong Ngan and Nguyen Nhu Nguyen – ranked third at the event, after Malaysia (champion) and Singapore (second place).
This is the top performance for the country – in 2014 Vietnam ranked 4th only.
Notably, Nguyen Nhu Nguyen was champion in Group E of WAGC (official tournament) for his three day achievements of 9-under par, 8-under par, and 11-over par, respectively (nett 63; 64; 83).
Sharing the Vietnamese team’s results during the three day competition, Hoang Hung Son, head of the team said that at the end of day 2, Vietnam still ranked fourth. With the ‘full-scale attack’ tactic, the team spectacularly won the 3rd place.
Nguyen said: “It is wonderful. The result is the deserved reward for us in competing.”
The Vietnamese team in addition to a strong performance also impressed international golf teams with their uniforms. The organisers invited them to join an interview with the US and Russia teams. Speaking highly of golfers from Vietnam, the US golf team leader Greg said that Vietnam players have good techniques, impressive uniforms and a friendly manner.
WAGC 2015 was held over six days, taking place on three courses at Gloria News Course, Gloria Old Course and Lykia Link Course. Results from competition in the first three days were used to separately calculate winners for each course. This year’s event drew the participation of nearly 400 golfers, alternately competing on three different courses in three days. Final results are based on total points after each day of the tournament.
Previously, the five Vietnamese golfers had won the final round of the TPBank World Amateur Golfers Championship – Vietnam Final 2015 that took place at Dam Vac course in northern Vinh Phuc province with the participation of 45 amateur golfers across the country.
A representative from TPBank, the organiser of WAGC in Vietnam and donor for Vietnam golf team at the world event, said that the bank’s hosting of WAGC in Vietnam for three consecutive years, from 2015 to 2017, has helped gradually improve Vietnam golf standards, as well as creating a chance to bring Vietnamese golfers to the world.
