Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam sent 51 athletes and officials to compete in the seventh ASEAN Schools Games which kicked off in Brunei on November 22.

The team will compete in four out of seven sports at the event, including athletics, badminton, golf and pencak silat.

The 17-year-old, who is enrolled at America Schools Bangkok in Thailand, triumphed at the Vietnam Ladies Amateur Open Championship 2015 earlier this month. She won the same tournament last year at the age of 16.

The tournament aim to foster greater collaboration among school students in ASEAN member countries and spur social progress, and the spirit of partnership and equality in the region through cooperation in the field of sports.

It also seeks to provide opportunities for school athletes to interact and engage in cultural exchanges within ASEAN.

This year’s tournament drew the participation of nearly 3,000 athletes and officials from eight countries, including Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

The games will continue until November 29.

The first tournament was held in Thailand in 2009.
